COMPETITION CLASSES

The following classifications are for both male and female.

For the purpose of determining your class, use your age on December 31, 2008

a.   Boy/Girl*  • 13 - 16 years of age.  These competitors will not carry a rifle and will shoot only from the prone position at offhand targets without the aid of a cuff.  These athletes should be encouraged to practice shooting offhand but in a competition, they will only be permitted to shoot prone. 

b    Youth* • 17 - 18 years of age.   These competitors must carry a rifle and shoot from both the prone and offhand positions at regulation targets.

c.    Junior* • 19 - 20 years of age.   These competitors must carry a rifle and shoot from both the prone and offhand positions at regulation targets.

d.    Senior  •  Post Scholastic - 39 years of age.  These competitors must carry a rifle and shoot from both the prone and offhand positions at regulation targets.

e.   Master  •  40 years of age and older. These competitors must carry a rifle and shoot from both the prone and offhand positions at regulation targets.

f.    Novice  •  Competitors who are over 16 years of age, in their first season of competition, or choose not to carry a rifle will shoot both prone and offhand at the offhand targets without a cuff.

*     Athletes may ask their club to sponsor an appeal to the State Biathlon  Committee that would enable them to compete in the next higher classification.  The committee will base its decision on the athlete's ability to handle the requirements of the new classification and to compete safely. Athletes younger than 12 are not permitted to use .22 caliber rifles in New York State.
